Winter Mountaineering Courses

This is a three-day course developing winter walking and mountaineering skills and is at an introductory level.

Working in a small group of up to 2 with your instructor, the first day of the course will involve meeting other participants and discussing everyone's aims and objectives. Your instructor will then tailor the course to ensure you get the most you can out of the week.

Topics normally covered:

  • Winter clothing and equipment
  • Winter walking skills
  • Development of movement skills on steeper ground-Snow/Ice and scrambling type ground
  • Use of a rope, slings and karibiners
  • Navigation in a winter environment
  • Construction and use of snow anchors
  • Selection and use of rock anchors
  • Abseiling in a winter environment
  • Winter skills - Navigation, route selection and preparation
  • Avalanche knowledge

Equipment and Kit Information

All equipment will be provided, but bring along a packed lunch and plenty water. Transport from Dundee is available during the course.

Aonach Eagach traverse

The most challenging ridge on the mainland, the Aonach Eagach ridge in Glencoe is sure to give you an amazing day out.

Our experienced guide will take you across the full traverse, 'bagging' 2 Munro's in the process as you scramble along knife edge ridges, climb airy pinnacles and enjoy one of the best outings Scotland.

All these days are staffed by Mountaineering and Climbing Instructors, due to the committing nature of the route we run this day with a maximum of 2 clients to 1 guide. All climbing equipment is provided.

Ben Nevis via ledge route and the CMD arete

Climb Britain's Highest mountain by the infamous North Face, avoiding the crowds this route gives a sense of remoteness as you move through stunning scenery on your way to the summit.

Curved ridge in Glencoe

The classic mountaineering day out, Buachaille Etive Mór stands alone at the entrance to Glencoe and this route is the best way up. Working in a small team of 2 your experienced guide will lead you up through some amazing terrain.

This is a grade 3 scramble and as such will involve some easy rock climbing, all equipment is provided.
